How it works:
Dreamcast-Games were intended to be played on a 4:3 TV. Only a very small handful of games have a widescreen-option (e.g. Rayman 2). In consequence, when displayed on a modern Widescreen-TV you have either black bars left and right or a stretched image. However, it is possible to alter the games to be displayed in fullscreen with their correct aspect ratio, so that the game‘s graphics are not distorted. To achive that, one can try to manipulate the geometry of a game by basically squeezing the image together, so that when stretched on a Widescreen-TV the whole enviorment and characters will look normal.

As you can see by the second picture above, squeezing the picture horizontly will make more area on the sides visible (represented by the two small circles). This, of course, will only work for games, which render the whole gaming world outside the 4:3 area. It can not work for games, which are using static or pre-rendered backgrounds as well as bitmaps or videos, because they all have a fixed ascpect ratio. So most 2D-Games do not have a widescreen-hack, just because of the way they are. In other cases a code just hasn‘t been found yet, or the game simply has no way of modifying it in such a manor. There are still over 100 Games, that can be patched to widescreen, many of which belong to the best titles on the system. Please note: Even if the game itself runs in 16:9 thanks to a code, the intro movies, logos, title screen and such will usually not be affected and appear stretched on a 16:9 display.
How to use it:
You have two options. Either you go for a Codebreaker-Code or a Hex-Patch. The difference is simple. Codebreaker-Codes alter the game‘s code in memory, leaving the game itself untouched. Hex-Patches change the actual data of the game itself permanently. Deciding on which way would be the better for you depends on how you want to play your games.
1. If you want to play the original copies of your games on a real dreamcast, you have to use a Codebreaker disc, enter the codes and boot the game with it. If you own a GDEMU (which can load GDI-Images) or have a selfbootable CDI-Image of your game, then you‘re better off patching those images with a hex-editor. We recommend HxD for this, because it can handle big files with no problems.
2. If you‘re playing your games on an emulator (such as Reicast, Demul or Redream), Hex-patching would be the way to go. At least when you are using one of the later two. In the case of Reicast (Retrorch with Reicast-Core), you can rely on the Retroarch built-in cheat-engine. We would recommend using our cheats-archive and set Retroarch to autoload cheats on game startup. For the few games Reicast will not play (mostly because it doesn‘t support WinCE games yet), you can hex-patch the game and play it on Demul.
You can download our Cheat-Archive for Retroarch with Reicast-Core here. It contains all the codes from the list beyond (excluding the few incompatible ones). Please note: We can not guide you through the setup process of Retroarch. It can be a little confusing at the beginning. Be sure to change aspect ratio in options from "core provided" to "16:9".
Widescreen-Codes for use with Codebreaker
This list should be the most complete one currently on the net (28.05.2019). We checked pretty much every code on the list and corrected faulty ones. Most of the codes were found and published by members at assemblergames-forums. Namely Esppiral, yzb3785936, S4pph4rad and many others. Some codes have also been found by Segaretro.org and Elotrolado.net. We ourselves found about 40 codes on our own. We're are deeply sorry, that we can not credit each and every code on the list, but we can only thank all the above mentioned people and members others who contributed in the widescreen-thread for their work an passion for the Dreamcast-Scene.

What means "clipping"?
Clipping describes some sort of "flickering" on the side of the image. For example, when you turn your character left, you will notice on the left side on the screen, that the game is busy builing up the game area for you. This can be annoying. For most games this can be fixed. An unfortunate example where no fix has been found yet would be Quake III. This is, why no code is listed here.
